Diego Gonzalo and Joel Morales Gear Up to Lead Torres–Sobato Into a New Season

In every team sport, having big stars is undoubtedly important — but true success also depends on the steady hands and seasoned leadership of the veterans who guide the next generation. Cycling is no exception, and for Torres–Sobato, that guiding force comes from two experienced riders: Diego Gonzalo and Joel Morales, who are set to captain the team once again in the 2026 season.

For Diego Gonzalo (Logroño, 2001), 2026 will mark his seventh season with Torres–Sobato since joining from the development team Quesos Albéniz at the start of 2020. Over the years, Gonzalo has carved out his niche in the peloton as a powerful sprinter. His growing list of achievements includes becoming Champion of La Rioja in 2024 and claiming victory at this year’s Copa Criterium de Barbastro. Although he initially considered hanging up his bike this winter, Gonzalo has decided to extend his career for another season — continuing to be a key pillar of the team, especially as a mentor to the younger riders stepping into the pro ranks.

Meanwhile, Joel Morales (Argentina, 2001) brings his own wealth of experience to the leadership group. Morales joined the Fernando Barceló Team over five years ago after completing his debut U23 season in his hometown of San Luis within the region’s Continental structure. His development may have been steady, but 2024 marked a true breakout year as the team’s breakaway specialist and intermediate sprint expert. Morales climbed the podium as the winner of the sprints classification in several key races, including the Trofeo Guerrita, Trofeo Casa Luisa, and the Gran Clàssica CC Terraferma.

As Torres–Sobato looks ahead to a new chapter in 2026, the leadership and experience of Gonzalo and Morales will be invaluable. Their presence will not only strengthen the team’s performance on the road but also shape the next generation of riders coming through the ranks — proving once again that greatness in cycling isn’t just about winning races, but also about building a legacy.
